History and Memory in Contemporary Poland - Practicum

Sunday, February 27, 2022 - 08:00 to Saturday, March 5, 2022 - 20:00

This intensive course provides students with unique insight into the problems of remembering violent pasts through an exploration of the controversies of contemporary history and memory in Poland as found in the landscapes, museums, and voices of Polish citizens. Especially central to this course are the on-going memory wars as the Polish state attempts to rewrite the events and meaning of the past, particularly the ruptures of
the Second World War, the Shoah, and life under communism and, consequently, Polish identity. To provide a framework, the course begins with a day of preparatory lectures in Paris and continues with hands-on exploration in the Polish cities of Gdansk, Warsaw, and Lodz. Explore the shape of collective memory in the Museum of the Second World War and the European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk, the Polin, the Warsaw Uprising Museum,
and the Museum of Life Under Communism in Warsaw as well as in walking tours of the former ghettos in Warsaw and Lodz and the Jewish cemetery in Lodz.
