VIRTUAL EVENT

Fifty Sounds: A Reading and Talk by Polly Barton

Tuesday, April 6, 2021 - 17:30 to 19:00

AUP's Center for Writers and Translators is delighted to present a reading and conversation with Polly Barton about听Fifty Sounds, winner of the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize. In the book, Barton attempts to exhaust her obsession with the country she moved to at the age of 21. From听min-min, the sound of air screaming, to听jin-jin, the sound of being touched for the very first time, from听hi'sori, the sound of harboring masochist tendencies, to听mote-mote, the sound of becoming a small-town movie star,听Fifty Sounds听is a personal dictionary of the Japanese language, recounting her life as an outsider in Japan. "Witty, exuberant" and "so much fun to read" (Rivka Galchen),听Fifty Sounds听is an exceptional debut about the quietly revolutionary act of learning, speaking, and living in another language.听Polly Barton is a Japanese literary translator. Her translation include听Where the Wild Ladies Are听by Aoko Matsuda,听There's No Such Thing As an Easy Job听by Kikuko Tsumura, and听Spring Garden听by Tomoka Shibasaki. She lives in Bristol.
