AH2024 Introduction to Islamic Art & Architecture

In the Middle Ages, Christians, Jews and Muslims lived side by side in southern Spain, enriching each other鈥檚 cultures. Discover this vibrant multicultural heritage in the Andalusian cities of Seville, epicentre of Moorish culture, and Cordoba, capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from the eighth to tenth centuries. Architecture and urban form are significant themes during this trip, alongside the dynamics of cultural borrowing between the Catholic, Arab and Jewish traditions of the mediaeval period. In Cordoba, highlights include the Mezquita (great mosque, now a cathedral) and the bustling Jewish quarter, while in Seville visit the world鈥檚 largest gothic cathedral and the Real Alcazar palace (aka the gardens of Dorne in Game of Thrones). Take the opportunity to see a feisty flamenco performance on a sultry Spanish night.
